Do you get confused by all the different types of
pearls you see on the internet? What types of pearls are in necklaces, bracelets, or earrings you see online or in a store?
See this 2020 Guide to Pearl types for answers about baroque, rice, potato, biawa or biwa, keshi, and our favorite, Edison pearls. We cover a wide-range of types of pearls.
NAUGHTON BRAUN PEARLS – Show-n-Tell will help you understand what those complicated words mean.. So that you can know what you are buying. We help you understand "types of pearls"!
What does Coco Chanel say about pearls? After all she is an original expert...
Pearls are the Queen of Gems and Gems of Queens or so they say, and have been part of fashion for over 3000 years, but it was Coco Chanel in the 1930s who made pearl jewelry mainstream, casual, and quite honestly - cool (A Woman's Ideal Wardrobe, According to Coco Chanel, Payer). You can't help but notice how her ropes of pearls and the modern-day versions on Chanel models shown below look fresh and ever-so classic.
We are fortunate to be able to
offer you a wide variety of cool pearl jewelry in a multitude of different
styles that compliment your particular fashion sense.
And isn't it cool that even today pearls are still a powerful fashion choice and are even being enjoyed by Men!

So what kinds of pearls are there?
Many of the freshwater pearls we offer,
by-and-large, are not found here in the United States and offered only
occasionally by other retailers on other countries. Even more intriguing are
the exclusive designs that NAUGHTON BRAUN brings to the pearl fashion arena
with price points that mirror costume jewelry rather than prices set by
traditional jewelry stores or pearl fashion houses.
So our aim with this blog, in video and print, is to provide a show-n-tell of what NAUGHTON BRAUN can offer you in the way of exquisite pearls, particularly the types of freshwater pearls we incorporate into our designs exclusively for discriminating buyers, such as yourself. We know that where you buy is a choice, but we hope that once you buy, you will be sold on us!
What to know a Few Fun Facts?
1. Cultured pearls started in the early 20th century.
2. Cultured pearls can be made into shapes, like hearts and crosses and coins!
3. Some cultured pearls are just nacre so they are really light = keshi pearls
4. Most of the world's pearls come from China.
NAUGHTON BRAUN pearls are cultured pearls, a process developed in Japan in the early 20 th Century by Kokichi Mikimoto (so aren’t you glad that you are living in the 21st Century and reap these benefits) (Bloom, Tears of Mermaids, 2009) whereby shellfish are manually inserted with a bead, sometimes it is round, to create a round pearl, and often times, the bead is a distinct shape to create a pearl in a different shape (coin, oblong, “+”, “t”, “x”, stick, etc.). Essentially the shellfish is really irritated by the bead and does its very best to minimize the irritation by encasing the bead with its nacre; the shiny multi-hued hard coating typically seen on the inside of shells, think abalone!
Now, we also offer
another type of pearl that is actually a faulty by-product of the seeding
process and these freshwater pearls are known as keshis. Keshis come about
after the shellfish is seeded (and remember I said that the shellfish were
unhappy and wanted to get rid of that irritant) and they actually manage to
push the irritant near or nearly out of their shell, and in order to really,
really, make it go away, the shellfish keep applying their nacre to the now
non-existent bead, creating an organic flat shaped pearl. These flat shaped
pearls known as keshis essentially contain no primer bead and are all nacre, so
very, very light in weight and beautifully shaped by the shellfish.Essentially they are a mistake. A mistake
that pearl markets around the globe, especially in China, have begun to
capitalize on once they realized that they quite valuable and sought after
rather than simply discarding them.
China sources 95% of the world’s pearls (Bloom, Tears of Mermaids, 2009) and once upon a time the pearls from China were tiny and quite frankly, ugly. Since that time, the 70’s-80’s pearls from China have become BIG business and many freshwater farms were developed. At NAUGHTON BRAUN, we work with a family-owned farm and directly with the Beijing Pearl Market for all out beautiful pearls.
Types of NAUGHTON BRAUN Freshwater Pearls:
We currently offer 11 different types of freshwater pearls in our beautiful jewelry and the pearls range in colors from white to pink to silver, grey and black and are often mixed with semi-precious gems and stones, creating stunning color and textured creations.
